Reducing water consumption

Our goal to increase water efficiency in the leather tanning process is a big part of our sustainability mission. ECCO Leather’s DriTan™ technology was developed as a first step towards more water-efficient leather manufacturing, a game-changing production method for the leather industry.

Having been around for thousands of years, leather-tanning was always thought to be impossible without using large amounts of water. ECCO DriTan™ reinvented the industry by using moisture already present in the hides.

When using the ECCO DriTan™ technology, there is no need to add water during the tanning process. After introducing this method, ECCO saves 20 litres of water per hide, and more than 25 million litres of water used in production annually.

We are proud of the quality, durability and versatility of ECCO DriTan™ leather. That’s why we have made the technology available to other leather tanneries, to make a positive impact on water-efficiency for the whole leather industry.

Minimizing Waste

DriTan™ technology saves 600 tons of sludge from reaching landfills per year, and by bringing new life to our byproducts, we are steadily moving closer to our goal of zero waste.

stories sustainability carbon

Carbon footprint

We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint, which is not just a goal for the future, but something we are doing right now. By working with bioscavenge, we are able to purify and recycle the water we use in a circular loop style. In 2022, we significantly reduced landfill by recovering or recycling 76 % of waste from our shoe factories around the world. Similarly, we recycled or recovered 66 % of waste in our leather tanneries, numbers we are continuously working on improving.

Made to last

We are continuously improving how we design and manufacture ECCO shoes so that they last season after season. Slow-fashion durability and classic style are built in thanks to ECCO FLUIDFORM™ and ECCO TRAYTECH™ technology.

ECCO FLUIDFORM™

ECCO FLUIDFORM™

ECCO FLUIDFORM™ is our advanced direct comfort technology, where lightweight fluid materials are transformed into solid soles that are made to follow the natural curves of your feet.

ECCO TRAYTECH™

ECCO TRAYTECH™

ECCO TRAYTECH™ is where our comfortable, flexible midsoles meet traction-enhancing outsoles that give increased comfort, durability and stability.

Care for the planet

Caring for the planet and continuing to improve and find more sustainable ways to create our products is at the core of everything we do at ECCO. That is why are committed to reaching four ambitious environmental goals by 2030.
